Directors and Management
Funwe Farm Ltd Directors and Senior Managers
The Directors are: Jon Lane, a British national (Managing Director), Carrie Osborne, a British national (Development Director), James Mchakama, a Malawian national (Company Secretary), Ronald Mataya, a Malawian national (Non-Executive Director), and Tom Adlam, a British national (Non-Executive Director representing ASIF).
Jon Lane is a civil engineer by profession, who has worked as a Chief Executive in NGOs and the United Nations since 1991 and returned to Malawi in August 2012 to work full-time as Managing Director. Carrie Osborne is a public health professional, who worked most recently for Save the Children as the Program Manager and Chief of Party on a large HIV and AIDS program that ended in 2007, since when she has worked full-time as Operations Director for FFL and since July 2010 almost full-time as Development Director responsible for the company’s policies, procedures, human resource planning, internal controls, and community development work. James Mchakama is an accountant and auditor based in Blantyre with many years’ experience in company secretary work and audit. Dr. Ronald Mataya is a prominent and respected Malawian doctor who is currently Dean of a Medical School in USA and visits Malawi periodically. Tom Adlam is the Managing Partner of Pearl Capital which is the Fund manager for ASIF; with 20 years’ experience of investing in African agriculture; he is currently based in Uganda and visits Malawi quarterly for FFL’s Board meetings.
Led by the Managing Director, the company’s work is grouped in three operational areas plus finance and supporting functions, led by the following managers who together comprise the senior management team.
Gilbert Sungani is the Farm Manager of Funwe Farm, responsible for all FFL’s production and general work at that farm. He joined the company’s employment in February 2012. With a Diploma in Agriculture, he worked for many years with General Farming Ltd in successively senior farm managerial posts.
Roy Nyundo is the Acting Farm Manager of Mitongwe Farm, responsible for all FFL’s production and general work at that farm. With a Certificate in Agriculture, he worked for various farming companies before joining FFL in 2007.
Mike Baluti is the Field Manager, responsible for supervising the work of the company's 45 Outgrowers and for the internal quality control of all Funwe Seed. Mike joined the company in mid-2013 after 30 years in the government concentrating on seed inspection and maize breeding.
Storage and Processing
Macdonald Thawale is the Factory Manager responsible for storing and processing all the company's seed. He has occupied this post since mid-2013 having previously worked as a Factory Manager at several leading Malawian companies associated with agricultural and food products.
Wed Chipungu is the Marketing Manager responsible for marketing and selling Funwe Seed. He worked for many years in sales and marketing for two other major seed companies before joining Funwe Farm Ltd in this capacity in August 2012.
Finance and supporting functions
Mavuto Mbewe is the Finance Manager, responsible for FFL’s financial transactions and records. He has a Certificate in Financial Accounting, and worked in several finance institutions, most recently as a manager in FINCA, until joining FFL in this post in June 2009.
Collectively the senior management team cover the technical and professional skills relevant to the work of FFL. The team take collective responsibility for the day-to-day management of the company’s work under the guidance of the Board of Directors. FFL expects the senior managers to adhere to standards of good professional conduct. They all complete documents declaring any potential conflicts of interest.
